Innovate Malaysia Design Conference (IMDC) 2015

18.08.2016 – This year, the grand finale of the Innovate Malaysia Design Conference (IMDC) was held at the Connexion@Nexus, Bangsar South. The event is the culmination of a national-level engineering design competition for university students which is supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, TalentCorp, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), as well as technology companies. IEM was the sponsor for the Best Paper Award worth RM1500. The guest of honour for the event was Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s department.

Innovate Malaysia Design Conference is a multi-discipline engineering design conference and competition that has been running with the support of technology companies as well as the IEM since 2010. It is open to all undergraduate engineering and computer science students in Malaysia. The goal of the competition is to promote innovation culture and mindsets among university graduates, to enhance knowledge and skillset in practical engineering and promote greater interest in engineering design, and to promote more industry and academia collaboration.

 

A total of 250 entries were received for the competition, out of which, 35 entries qualified for the finals at the grand finale event. The participants competed in seven industry tracks sponsored by Altera, Intel, Keysight, MathWorks, Microsoft, National Instruments and Siltera/CEDEC, and well as four design challenges sponsored by Motorola Solutions, Sime Darby, TM and ViTrox. In addition, the Best Paper Award and Best Video Award were sponsored by IEM and Dreamcatcher Consulting Sdn. Bhd. respectively. The entries for the IEM award were reviewed by a panel of judges from the Electronic Engineering Technical Division (eETD) led by Sivarama Rajah. The IEM was represented at the event by Ir. Dr. JG Khor, Dr. Hor Poh Jin and Dr. Leow Cheah Wei.

The Award for Excellence went to Lim Huey Woan from UTM for her project entitled “Throb Arrhythmia Screener System-on-Chip (SOC)-based Arrhythmia Screener”. The project, which was implemented on an Altera platform, is able to detect 4 types of arrhythmia and can present the information either as raw ECG signals, R-R peak interval or text-based result report. The IEM Best Paper Award went to Yiauw Diing Shenq and Wee Hin Sheik from USM for their paper on “Development of Add-On Active Vibration Control (AVC) for Power Tools”. Yiauw and Wee also won First Prize in the National Instruments track as well as the Dreamcatcher Best Video Award.
