IEM Penang STEM INnovations Showcase 2023
As part of the IEM’s vision, this competition is aimed to encourage students to engage themselves more in practical works, and to use their creativity to innovate an invention.
Project Theme:
Engineering Innovation for Sustainability & Artificial Intelligence.
Project Theme Scope:
- Any science, engineering or technology project can be submitted following competition theme.
- The project scale must be based on students' ability to construct within/around 1 month.
- Project development and/or construction must be done under the supervision of teacher-in-charge, supervisor or school teachers.
Participation:
- All secondary school students* (Form 1 to Form 5) are invited to participate in the contest.
- Each participating team should consist of 3-4 students and 1 teacher-in-charge.
- Each school can register up to 2 teams only. Students will need to discuss with the teacher-in-charge for the formation and registration of teams representing respective school. Additional teams from the same schools (third or more teams) will be subject to approval from the organising committee.
- Teams will need to submit their registration online before * 6th August 2023.
- Based on the Project Abstract, shortlisted teams will qualify to the Finals at the Han Chiang STEM Showcase (25-26th Aug 2023).
- Qualifying teams will need to construct the project within a given time period.
- Teams will be required to present their projects to the panel of judges as well as exhibit their projects to the public on both days during the STEM Showcase (25-26 Aug 2023).
- Teams may also be required to prepare a 5-minute Powerpoint presentation about their project to the audience.
- All monetary costs incurred to produce or deliver the project are entirely at the team’s own expense.

At the Han Chiang STEM Showcase (25-26th Aug 2023):
- All team members must be punctual to the event. Latecomers will have less time for setup and those who missed the judging session will not be given a second chance.
- All team members are responsible for setting up and demonstrating their own project at the STEM Showcase venue.
Project Ownership:
- Project submitted must be participants’ own work. Any plagiarised works will not be accepted.
- Projects that have been used, as is, for other prior competitions will be disqualified. However, the projects can be accepted if they have undergone significant improvements and/or modifications, provided that the project is not protected by copyright, or the right of using the project has been granted. The decision whether or not to accept the project is under the discretion of the judges.
Scope of Project:
- Any science, engineering or technology project can be submitted. Project should be aligned with the competition themes.
- The project should be at a scale that can be designed and constructed in the given timeframe.
- Examples of projects are as follows:
- Projects with the use of electronic components and/or microcontrollers, such as, but not limited to, Micro:bit, Arduino series, or single-board computer, such as Raspberry Pi series, etc.
- Projects with dynamic/moving mechanical parts, such as those with gears, pneumatics, engines, wind turbines, etc.
- Structural or static mechanical projects, such as scale model, 3D printed model, etc.
- Projects related to new or innovative use of materials and/or chemicals.
- Cross-functional projects with a mix of the above.
- Project development and/or construction must be done under the supervision of teacher-in-charge, supervisor or school teachers.
- Safety precautions must be observed at all times.
